Julie Miller Presents Faculty Recital at The Crane School of Music

SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music Hosts Concert Featuring Newly Restored Works of Keith Gates, Led by Pianist Julie Miller

POTSDAM, NY (09/13/2017) (readMedia)-- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will present a special faculty recital highlighting compositions by Keith Gates, including two newly restored works, on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

Julie Miller, an instructor of piano at Crane, will lead the performance. She is a specialist in the works of Gates, and was his colleague and duet partner at McNeese State University from 1991 to 2003, prior to joining the Crane faculty. Miller will be joined by Dr. Samantha Stinson and Dr. Lonel Woods for the vocal works on the recital.

Gates' only piano sonata was partially missing, so it has been transcribed from an audio recording from 1968. Along with that piece, a song cycle will also be presented, which was previously unusable because the composer hadn't received permission to use the lyrics. Miller has set new words to the music, including poetry by Shakespeare, Dickinson, Suckling and the composer's daughter, Christina Gates.

This concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.

This concert will be broadcast live on the SUNY Potsdam website at the performance time. To view the program and see other upcoming streaming performances, visit www.potsdam.edu/academics/Crane/streaming.
