ASHLAND, OH (10/25/2012)(readMedia)-- Medina resident Justin Nolan, who is a senior double majoring in information systems and computer science at Ashland University interned at The Timken Company in Canton, Ohio, over the summer. He was under the supervision of the Unit Manager of Database and Metrics Brad Jone.
Nolan is the son of Gary and Sharon Nolan of Medina. He is a 2009 graduate of Highland High School.
"The Timken Company is a well-diversified company famous for its role in the steel and bearing industry. There are over 21,000 employees globally and the company has its name all over the world," says Nolan regarding the company.
Nolan's duties were primarily in the Process Improvement department supporting steel operations at all three steel plants in Canton, Ohio. He also built applications and reports to support steel processes.
In addition, Nolan created several web screens and reports for plant controllers. He also created many other reports for steel piercing mills as well as updating applications for data processes for users in all facets of Timken's business.
When asked what he learned from his internship Nolan replied, "I learned important user interaction in implementation. I greatly increased my technical skills in rapid application development and learned much new software along the way. Timken intern committee programs also provided me with important background from people in many different areas of the company as well as important communication and networking skills."
Nolan believes from a technical standpoint that his classes at AU such as database management have taught him adequate SQL to be proficient from the start. "My computer science course gave me great background in C++ which made an easy transition to C#, which I used for application development," says Nolan. He also described how his other business core classes taught him important communication skills that helped him in his everyday interactions within the company.
Nolan believes his internship with The Timken Company will help him in his classes at AU by relating further material to its use in the business world along with also helping him grasp the important concepts and apply them to his career path.
Nolan's post-graduate plans are currently unsure, however he does plan to return to Timken next summer for a second internship from which he will more than likely apply for a full-time position or try to enter their rotational programs.
When asked if his internship changed his career plans, Nolan said it had in fact changed his career plans for the best. "I knew I was interested in database, but information technology offers so many different jobs it was tough to say that was my passion. After spending the summer at Timken there's no doubt I would like to pursue a career in the database support field," says Nolan.
"Timken offered much more than just work experience in the internship program," he added. "I highly recommend undergraduates of all areas to apply for a position at this great company."
