KU to Support Geography Awareness Week Nov. 12-16

KUTZTOWN, PA (10/24/2018) Kutztown University is set to host week-long events for Geography Awareness Week on campus November 12-16.

According to National Geographic, Geography Awareness Week was created more than 25 years ago as a program to encourage citizens to think and learn about the significance of place and how we affect and are affected by it. It aims to inspire people to make effective decisions, understand geo-spatial issues, and even recognize their impacts as global citizens.

Below is a list of events that will occur on campus throughout the week. Most events are open to the entire campus community, as well as the public.

Monday, 11/12, 6:30 p.m.

KU Geography Club Presents 'Plastic Paradise' Film,

Boehm Science Building Room 262

Learn the unexpected economic and ecological facets of plastic pollution and ways for each of us to minimize our plastic footprint. Discussion Q&A to follow.

Tuesday, 11/13, 7 p.m.

Game Night, Old Main Lobby

Come relax and compete. Map puzzles, on-line quizzes, and Pandemic! If you're good at it, you might win. Small prizes, snacks.

Wednesday, 11/14, 6 p.m. (promotional flyer attached)

Sustainability: Your Choices, Your Future. Panel Discussion,

Boehm Science Building Room 145

The panel is comprised of local professionals concerned with sustainability in our region. This issue affects the current generation. Can we afford sustainable practices or not? Q&A to follow.

Thursday, 11/15, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Sustainability: Plastics Exchange, Old Main Lobby

Exchange your single-use plastic grocery bags or water bottles for environmentally friendly, re-usable bags, bottles. One per person while supplies last.

Friday, 11/16, 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

KU Geography 2nd Annual Alumni/Student Mixer

Invitation only.

The focal point of Geography Awareness Week is the panel, which is being presented by the KU Department of Geography, the KU Geography Club and Gamma Theta Upsilon. The keynote speaker of the panel is Scot Case, business strategist, executive coach and sustainability consultant at Springboard International.

The panel will also feature local professionals, including Rick Carr of Rodale Institute, Larry Lloyd of Berks Nature and Shana Rose of the Sustainable Energy Fund. A Q & A session will follow the panel.

Throughout Case's career as a strategist and sustainability expert, he has worked with organizations including the White House, World Bank, Walmart, Johnson and Johnson, and Disney. He has an impressive background of integrating environmental and social considerations into organizations' business strategy, operations, marketing, and supply chain management practices to launch and implement sustainability initiatives.

Case holds a Bachelor of Science in Science, History and Economics and a Master of Science in Political Science with an emphasis on Environmental Policy and Theory from Virginia Tech.
