ASHLAND, OH (10/25/2012)(readMedia)-- Fresno resident Katie McVay, who is a senior accounting major at Ashland University, interned with the Ohio Auditor of State in Canton, Ohio, over the summer. She was under the supervision of the Senior Audit Manager Shane Statler.

McVay is the daughter of Dave and Michelle McVay of Fresno. She is a 2009 graduate of Ridgewood High School.

"During the summer, I interned with the Auditor of State's Office where I worked as an Assistant Auditor. This firm is a state government office that specializes in auditing governmental entities, such as townships, cities, and school districts throughout the state of Ohio to confirm that the entity follows all state and federal laws and revised codes," McVay said.

McVay's duties as an Assistant Auditor included creating tests to determine whether the entity followed all state and federal rules and regulations, to determine whether the entity followed all compliance issues that pertain to the Ohio Revised Code and communicate with clients to verify that all information used in the audit were correct.

From the internship McVay has learned how to be more analytical when arriving at specific numbers that are used on the financial statements. She was also able to learn more about the auditing process in general and how each test fit into the overall auditing puzzle. Lastly she learned how to properly communicate with her colleagues and clients that they worked closely with throughout the auditing process.

"My classes at Ashland University prepared me for this internship by giving me the basic knowledge of accounting and how to create the appropriate journal entries. Additionally, Business Communications prepared me tremendously by teaching us how to properly address the business people that we will work with," says McVay.

She believes that her internship experience will help her in her classes at AU by allowing her to implement her experiences with the concepts that she will be learning in class. McVay explains that she will now be able to connect the topics to a real life situation where she did not have the same opportunity to do so before.

"After completing my internship, I am still uncertain about my future career plans. The internship proved that I do like the auditing side of accounting, but I am uncertain if I can see myself as an auditor for my career path for many years to come," she said. "I have decided that I would like to find an internship in a corporation to see which route of accounting will best suit me in the future."

McVay's final comment on her internship was, "Overall, I enjoyed working for the Auditor of State this summer. This internship challenged me and made me think about how accounting and auditing really work as a process. This experience was very rewarding and I would recommend this opportunity to anyone."
