Katie Poerner Of Comfort Named To ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team

BROWNWOOD, TX (05/29/2013)(readMedia)-- Howard Payne University senior Katie Poerner earned a spot on the 2012-13 American Southwest Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team for softball, the league office announced on Wednesday.
The honor, in its sixth academic year, recognizes student-athletes that achieve a higher level of academic achievement (a 3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team.
SOFTBALL - Katie Poerner
This season, Katie Poerner led the team in at bats, triples and stolen bases (18 for 20). From Comfort, Texas, she is the HPU record holder for triples in a season with eight in 2012 and for a career with 15. She is also having her best season in the field with a .935 fielding percentage. In 2012, she was named the ASC West Division Player of the Year and to the ASC 1st Team All-West Division. Last season, she was also on ASC All-Tournament team. Majoring in Mathematics, she is a three-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection. She is also a member of the HPU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In 2012, she was a member of the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete team and this semester won her second Tami Pattillo Memorial award.
Overall, 106 student-athletes from basketball, baseball, golf, softball, tennis and track and field were named to the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams.
