Katina Burley of Baltimore Awarded Gough-Broun Scholarship

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD (01/06/2014)(readMedia)--  Katina Burley, a Baltimore, Md., native and senior at St. Mary's College of Maryland, was recently awarded the Tommy Yeager Scholarship. Established in 2003 in memory of her husband by Martha Myers Yeager '41, the scholarship benefits Baltimore-area students who have academic merit.

At St. Mary's College of Maryland, Burley is studying political science. She hopes to pursue a career in education policy. "The disadvantages that urban students are faced with when coming [to college] are unfortunate," says Burley. "My passion may lead me to set up an organization to help mend the gap of education in urban environments, so students are able to attend college." Burley may also use this passion to run for political office in Baltimore or go into law, she says

Outside of the classroom, Burley is vice president of Black Student Union and the international chair of Rotaract Club. She is also in Dance Club and tutors for the DeSousa-Brent Scholars Program. She also enjoys debating education policy and politics and helping those in need.

St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. More than 2,000 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland
