Kent Morgan selected to intern with GROWMARK
Kent Morgan '14, a crop science major from Klingerstown, Pa., has been selected to participate in the GROWMARK Internship Program for summer 2013. He will serve as an agronomy intern in Hershey, Pa. GROWMARK is a regional cooperative, which provides agriculture-related products and services in the U.S. and Canada. "The GROWMARK internship in my opinion is among the best in our field," said Kent's academic adviser, Natural Resources and Biosystems Management Department Co-Chair Dr. Steve DeBroux. Morgan heard about the internship from Dr. DeBroux. He interviewed with GROWMARK the day of the College career fair. After a follow-up interview in Harrisburg, Morgan learned he was selected. "I'm really excited and honored," said Morgan. "I was competing against a lot of students. I'm looking forward to getting the experience and doing more research-based work. I think this opportunity will help broaden my horizons and help me later in life." Morgan will be testing and caring for trial plots, assisting with application of chemical fertilizers, and observing how crops react to different fertilizers. He may also have the opportunity to travel with the company's agronomists to other GROWMARK locations. Agronomy interns are required to give a PowerPoint presentation on their work in front of management, staff, any faculty they invite, and other interns at the corporate office in Bloomington, IL at the end of the summer. After he graduates, Morgan is planning to work full-time in agriculture. The College has had a relationship with GROWMARK for about six years and about nine students from the College have interned with the company. The hiring team at GROWMARK selected Morgan based on his experiences at DelVal and his personality. "Kent had the basic agronomy coursework, practical field equipment and crop production experience we were looking for," said the GROWMARK hiring manager who selected Morgan. "The combination of experience and positive attributes Kent possesses made him the ideal candidate for the Hershey intern position." Experiential Learning Advisor Deanna Parkton said each semester the College works to bring GROWMARK on-campus for career fairs and on-campus interviewing days. "They give the students a very broad view of the corporate world," said Dr. DeBroux. "We can teach the science here, but this really gives them a flavor of what using that science is like in a corporate working environment."
