Kernel of an Idea Wins Des Moines Cook Fair Sunflower Honors

DES MOINES, IA (08/21/2017) (readMedia)-- Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines won first place and a $100 gift card in the Dakota Style Sunflower Kernels Recipe competition, judged Saturday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

Rebecca Howe of West Des Moines earned second place and a $50 gift card. Diane Rauh of Des Moines claimed third place and a $25 gift card.

Judges also awarded Honorable Mention of Deanna Smith of Des Moines

Entrants were judged on appearance and presentation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There were 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging was held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
