Kids Take the Bait at the 17th Annual Fishing Derby

STAUNTON, VA (04/21/2010)(readMedia)-- The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department will host the 17th Annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 1st. The event will take place at Lake Tams in Gypsy Hill Park. Event Coordinator, Frank Darcus, has received over $1000 in prizes from many local businesses to be given away to fisherpeople that morning. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the air horn will sound promptly at 8 a.m. to begin the derby.

Besides the random $1000 prize give-aways at the end of the event, children will also receive prizes and trophies for the largest, smallest, and most fish as well as prizes in other categories. Each registered child will receive a hot dog, drink and goody bag with bait. The Lake will be stocked by The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries with 800 Rainbow Trout. The lake will be posted beginning Friday and no fishing will be permitted until the horn sounds at 8 a.m. Children ages 4-15 do not need a fishing license to participate in this event.

The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department uses this event to promote outdoor recreation and recognize the many agencies and businesses that encourage fishing by selling fishing wares, lures and bait. Event Coordinator, Frank Darcus, has taught hundreds of children in the Staunton Recreation Summer Camps to fish. In his wake he has left quite a legacy thanks to his passion for fishing and teaching kids.
