FAIRFAX, VA (07/14/2011)(readMedia)-- Kiera Wood, a National Youth Correspondent at the Washington Journalism and Media Conference (WJMC) representing Redding, CT and Green Farms Academy, thanked Hoda Kotb, co-host of the fourth hour of NBC's "Today" and correspondent for "Dateline NBC," for providing the keynote speech at the 2011 WJMC.
With distinguished faculty, guest speakers, and direct access to elite D.C. practitioners, WJMC offers aspiring journalists and student leaders an unparalleled experience. The week-long program, held on George Mason University's state-of-the-art campus, encourages and inspires young leaders from across the country who desire a unique experience focused on successful careers in this dynamic industry.
Ms. Kotb inspired students with her story of persistence in breaking into the tough world of broadcasting. She detailed traveling across the country and being rejected by 27 different news affiliates before finally landing her first news gig. Kotb told the students, "Just the fact that you are here [at WJMC] puts you far ahead of the rest." She challenged the National Youth Correspondents to be the best they can be and "bloom where you are planted." Kotb allowed students a glimpse into her life, sharing some music from her iPod with the students, including Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow". After the speech, Kotb spent time signing books and taking pictures with the correspondents.
WJMC is a highly competitive program. Just 150 rising high school seniors were selected as correspondents representing their cities, states, and high schools. Correspondents were selected or nominated based on demonstrated leadership and interest in journalism and the ever-changing landscape of media, in addition to their academic excellence.
