Kwame Building Group Endows Teaching Scholarship

ST. LOUIS, MO (12/10/2009)(readMedia)-- Maryville University's School of Education has announced a new scholarship for students with an associate's degree from a St. Louis area community college who seek teacher certification. The scholarship is funded by a $50,000 donation from Kwame Building Group in St. Louis.

"As student diversity has increased throughout Missouri's schools, we are committed to doing all possible to increase the supply of diverse teachers," said Sam Hausfather, PhD. "This generous gift will help Maryville University respond to the real needs of area schools and of our students who need this important assistance."

Education students who wish to apply for the scholarship will be asked to write an essay that illustrates their desire to teach and discusses the imperative of giving back to one's community. Qualified applicants will be from underrepresented populations and demonstrate financial need.

"What better investment can we make than to develop strong educators that are passionate about improving the education of and opportunities available to our children," said Anthony Thompson, president and CEO of Kwame Building Group.

The scholarship award is for a period of two years, unless the student is in a five-year academic program, in which case the award would be for three years.
