Kyrs Schugt Receives Fulbright Award

AURORA , NY (07/23/2010)(readMedia)-- Former Wayzata H.S. student Kyra Schugt (Minnetonka)has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarship to Germany in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced recently. Schugt, who graduated from Wells College (New York) in 2009 with a degree in Art History with a minor in German, is one of over 1,500 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2010-2011 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. "I am greatly looking forward to immersing myself in the community's culture, and becoming a helpful member," said Schugt.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Recipients of Fulbright scholarships are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The Program operates in over 155 countries worldwide.

While in Germany, Schugt will spend 12 hours a week in the classroom. Besides this responsibility, she is considering ways that she can use her education and experience to create an interesting learning environment: "My plan is, in addition to classroom time, to form an English study group and an art or film club." She will be leaving the U.S. in August and will begin training on September 6 in Koln. Kyra has been assigned to the Hessen region in central Germany

Schugt excelled academically at Wells earning dean's list honors five times in her career, graduating Magna Cum Laude with distinction in her major, while being awarded the Fleissner German Prize; awarded to the student who has acquired the greatest knowledge of German language and literature in at least two years of College work in German. She also contributed greatly to the Wells community serving as a class officer and resident advisor. She was also a member of the community service activism board, Whirligigs singing group, and served as an Oddline coach for two years.
