ANNVILLE, PA (09/26/2016)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College will host a Homecoming Gala Concert Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. in Frederic K. Miller Chapel. The College's Concert Choir, Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra will perform, along with a performance by Dr. Shelly Moorman-Stahlman, College organist and professor of music. The event is free and open to the public.

To coordinate with the celebration of the College's 150th anniversary, the Symphony Orchestra will perform a portion of Richard Hol's "Symphony in D Minor." Hol is a Dutch composer and composed the symphony in 1866, the same year as LVC's founding.

One of the LVC Chamber Orchestra's pieces is the Handel Concerto Grosso, which will be performed in as close to a "baroque style" as students can manage on modern instruments. Dr. Hannes Dietrich, Newton and Adelaide Burgner Endowed Professor of Instrumental Music, directs the orchestra and said, "This builds upon some work I did as part of a faculty development grant, and allows our students to explore a very different performing style than they are used to."

Individually, the Concert Choir's selections will be "Song of Triumph" by Dale Grotenhuis and "Spaséñiye Sodélal" ("Salvation is Created") by Pavel Chesnokov.

In addition to their own selections, the ensembles will combine to perform three works, including an original piece, "Sail Fast!," by Dr. Matthew Erpelding, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities. The uplifting and celebratory program will also include Aaron Copland's "The Promise of Living," and a special performance of the Concert Choir's traditional benediction, Peter C. Lutkin's "The Lord Bless You and Keep You."

Lebanon Valley College's Music Department offers a variety of public performances by students, faculty, or guest visitors each semester. Please visit www.lvc.edu/music/events.aspx for additional information regarding concerts scheduled for this spring.
