ELMIRA HEIGHTS, NY (02/23/2010)(readMedia)-- Laborers International Union of North America, Local Union # 785, Elmira Region Apprentice Program, will conduct a recruitment from February 24, 2010 through January 26, 2011 for one skilled construction craft laborer apprentice worker, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.
Applications will be available at Local Union # 785, 157 Prescott Avenue, Elmira Heights, NY from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 4th Wednesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.
The Committee requires that applicants:
* Must be at least 18 years old.
* Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.), or equivalent.
* Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by physical examination after accepted in program, which includes a drug screening.
* Must have a valid driver's license to operate contractors' vehicles.
* Must be able to get to worksites throughout a three county area: Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
