DANVILLE , IL (05/22/2014)(readMedia)-- Lakeview College of Nursing will kick off a celebration of its 120-year anniversary on June 20 with a weekend of activities for alumni, faculty/staff, students and friends of the College of Nursing.

Originally known as the Danville Training School (DTS) for Nurses, the school opened its doors in November 1894 as a hospital-based school and graduated the first class of four students in 1896. During that time, students entered school under a three month probationary status and completed the program in two years.

With the recent graduation of 69 students, Lakeview now has over 1,900 alumni and is hoping that many of them will participate on some level with the school's anniversary.

"We are proud of our heritage and what we have accomplished over the years. It is our hope that alumni and others will take some time to reminisce and explore how Lakeview has changed over the years," explained Lakeview's President Sheila Mingee.

Lakeview is currently seeking feedback from alumni so that memories from several decades may be shared on the school's website. Alumni are encouraged to go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LCN120AnniversarySurvey to complete a survey and submit a photo to be a part of this activity.

At first, the School of Nursing offered a non-collegiate diploma of nursing and now the College of Nursing offers a bachelor of science in nursing degree in Danville, IL, as well as Charleston, IL.

In the early days of the school, the students lived together in a dormitory provided by the parent hospital and were single, white females, between nineteen and thirty years of age, according to Mingee. "We are happy to have a diverse student body today that includes a male population of 14% and a population of those who consider themselves to be of an ethnic minority at 15%."

More information regarding the history of the program is available in the "Lakeview 100 Years of Caring" book that is available on the College's website, http://www.lakeviewcol.edu/history. The book was compiled by the school's alumni centennial committee and includes several photos and a listing of the school's graduates.

Additionally, the College has many yearbooks from 1921 through the mid-1980s available digitally at https://archive.org/details/lakeviewcollegeofnursing.
