Langhorne Resident Matt McMahon Wins Alumni Award from DeSales University

CENTER VALLEY, PA (10/03/2013)(readMedia)-- On September 28, Langhorne, Pa., resident Matt McMahon was awarded the DeSales University Young Alumni Service Award during the school's 2013 Homecoming Weekend.

The Young Alumni Achievement Award recognizes alumni who graduated within the last 10 years and who has given extraordinary service to the University while leading a life that reflects the ideals of St. Francis de Sales.

McMahon, a 2008 graduate of DeSales, was actively involved with the activities run by the DeSales Center for Service and Social Justice. It was through these activities that Matt became invested in pursuing a career in international development to promote and protect social justice. After graduation, McMahon went on to earn a master's degree in diplomacy and international relations from Seton Hall University.

In the summer of 2012, McMahon moved to Bangkok, Thailand, where he became the regional gender focal person for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), In this role, McMahon works to ensure that women, children, and marginalized groups receive the protection needed to better survive natural disasters without discrimination. He also works with communities to create cultures of non-violence and peace, aiming to curb incidences of gender-based violence and the exploitation of women and children.

DeSales University, in Center Valley, Pa., is a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts university affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Founded by the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales in 1965, the 480-acre suburban campus is located 50 miles north of Philadelphia and about 90 miles south of New York City. A total enrollment of nearly 3,000 includes undergraduate day and evening students and graduate students. DeSales has approximately 100 full-time faculty members and offers more than 35 bachelor's degrees and eight graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines.
