Large Turnout Expected at Pitch, Hit and Run Competition

STAUNTON, VA (05/02/2011)(readMedia)-- The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department will host it' s annual Pitch Hit and Run Competition on Wednesday, May 4th. The event specifically targets youth baseball players in the Staunton Kiwanis Little League Program. Registration will begin at 5:30pm at Jerry May Field in Gypsy Hill Park. The official competition will begin at 6pm.

Three organizations collaborate on the hosting of the event for ages 7-14 years. The Kiwanis Club and Pepsi Co. provide hotdogs and drinks for each participant while the Staunton Parks and Recreation actually operates the event and distributes prizes and awards at the conclusion. The event is free and open to the public.

The particulars of the event involve a competition of players within their own age bracket (7-8)(9-10)(11-12)(13-14). In the running portion of the event each player gets one stop watch timed chance to achieve their fastest run from second base to homeplate. Next, players are permitted five throws at a target from the pitching rubber in the pitching portion of the event. The hitting skill is measured by the batter's ability of hit the baseball for distance and straight up the middle of the field off of a batting tee.

Winners overall in their age brackets as well as winners in each skill in each age level advance to the Regional competition in Richmond Virginia. This event is in line with Staunton Parks and Recreation Department goal of encouraging healthy active living in an effort to reduce obesity by providing avenues for physical activity.
