Laura Daniel Honored at Western New England University College of Engineering

SPRINGFIELD, MA (06/13/2012)(readMedia)-- Laura M. Daniel of Essex Junction, VT, received the James V. Masi Biomedical Engineering Award during Baccalaureate ceremonies at Western New England University. The award is presented to a graduating senior who demonstrates a mastery of biomedical engineering and an appreciation for the societal role of an engineer beyond their professional duties.
During the awards ceremony, Professor of Biomedical Engineering Dr. Judy Cezeaux praised Daniel's work on a pair of projects that resulted from Daniel's travels to Guatemala as part of a Global Health and Technology course. After performing health assessments in rural and urban hospitals, Daniel was involved in multi-disciplinary project to develop an autoclave testing device to ensure surgical instruments are properly sterilized. For her senior project, Daniel designed a low-cost ultrasound "phantom" to test equipment and train clinicians. The project earned her an honorable mention at the American Society for Engineering Education Northeast Conference student poster session and a first place award in the College of Engineering's Poster Day.
Daniel graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering. She served as President of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society, President of Engineering World Health, and Vice President of the Society of Women Engineers. She was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society, and named to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
