BATAVIA, NY (10/08/2015)(readMedia)-- The College Village student residence life community located adjacent to Genesee Community College's Batavia campus is offering a new course in the new "Root." Students now have the opportunity to take a course in the comfort of College Village. Leadership in the Community (CES 110) will begin on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 and meet every Tuesday from 5:30 – 7:30 P.M. for eight weeks. The one-credit course convenes in the Root, located in the basement of the Hemlock Hall. The course is open to all students, but those who reside at College Village can attend without having to trek up the hill to the main campus.

Facilitated by Instructor Kristen Mruk, who also serves as assistant director in the College's Student Activities Office, Leadership in the Community introduces students to various segments of leadership skills as well as the many different types of leadership opportunities that exist within a community. Genesee Community College will be the community of focus this term. The course utilizes experiential learning with a strong emphasis placed on structured group activities, in-class panel presentations, selected readings and class discussions that focus on leadership in the campus community where the students live, learn and lead.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate basic awareness of their own personal leadership style and the leadership opportunities in the local community. They will also be able to demonstrate the use of critical and creative thinking skills to solve problems, draw conclusions and apply leadership theory that promotes sustainability today and in the future by formulating viable solutions when facing issues in the community.

Establishing the Root within the basement of Hemlock Hall is part of GCC's and College Village's collaborative effort to encourage student success through new opportunities located within the residential community. The new space not only features a "smart" classroom space, but the area also offers WiFi, a small computer hub, as well as study, meeting and presentation spaces. In addition, College Village has launched a new Success Coaching program to aid students in setting and achieving goals for their college experience. Mary-Clare Stokes, the new College Village Success Coach has her office in the Root, and she works with residents to find academic resources and campus engagement opportunities.

"Student success and completion is a priority of GCC and College Village. For our College Village residents, the Root offers an excellent new avenue for students to succeed and achieve their personal goals," Ms. Stokes said.
