BATAVIA, NY (01/30/2015)(readMedia)-- Genesee Community College is pleased to have the College's director of transitional studies share his experience in Brazil. Assistant Professor Thomas Priester will speak as part of a panel presentation Live from Brazil: Education on Thursday, February 19, 2015 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Room T102 of the Conable Technology Building on GCC's Batavia campus.

Priester traveled to Brazil in summer 2014 and will discuss his observations of the South American nation. He has also arranged for several of his Brazilian colleagues to participate in the presentation via live video stream. Among the topics they will address are funding for education, teacher training, degrees vs. certificates and the fact that higher education in Brazil is free. "This is a very timely topic in light of President Obama's recent proposal for free community college in the U.S," Priester noted.

GCC has had a fruitful relationship with Brazil, with students and teachers visiting the country in recent years. In Fall 2013, seven Brazilian students spent a semester studying at GCC as part of the Brazilian Science Mobility Program or Science Without Borders.

This academic year, the College's Global Education Committee decided to focus on Brazil as that nation's profile continues to grow with major events such as the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, the first ever to be held in South America.

Dr. Priester spent time in Americana, a municipality of about 200,000 located in the state of São Paulo. He visited Fatec Americana, a school of about 2,200 students with which SUNY has an international cooperation agreement for the exchange of knowledge, students and teachers.
