ANNVILLE, PA (11/15/2013)(readMedia)-- The Lebanon Valley College Music Department will host a concert by the student percussion ensemble on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Lutz Hall of the Blair Music Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

The program opens with three movements from Thomas Gauger's "Gainsborough," and also includes Claude Debussy's "Danse," arranged by Whitney Prince; Philip Parker's "Contrasts;" and Leroy Anderson's "Plink, Plank, Plunk." The ensemble includes LVC students Joshua Bishop, Kevin Burke, Corrine Frederick, Hayley Holloway, Lucas Jeron, Amy Karnes, Kathleen King, Nathan Kleinschuster, Tyler Kollinok, Zachary Koss, Cory Paternoster, Hannah Pell, Mark Peters, Jackson Roberts, Scott Reagan, Selena Seymore, Lauren Spelling, Kandice Tanner, and J. Bruce Walters.

Robert Nowak, adjunct professor of music, directs the ensemble. He has been at the College for 26 years and takes great pride in the students' work ethic. "Each student brings their strengths to the ensemble and they each improve their weaknesses to have a strong ensemble able to play many styles of music. We spend a lot of time working on little details to perfect the concert."

Nowak notes that percussion is a unique form of music that highlights the strengths of the performer and allows for creative freedom. "The students use these instruments to make music without any of the other musical families. With percussion you have rhythm, melody, and harmony and the students can create almost any type of music."

Students, faculty, members of community, and anyone who enjoys the sounds of things being shaken, struck, scraped, rattled, or dropped are encouraged to attend.
