ANNVILLE, PA (02/02/2012)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College is celebrating Black History Month with a church service and soul food meal on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. in Miller Chapel. The service will be led by Pastor William Kerney of Charis Cathedral Church in York.
Throughout history, African American life has revolved around the Black Church, which is not only the center of worship, but the focal point of all communal activities-social, business, political, even educational. The origins of the Black Church and its growth and development in the Revolutionary Era were tied into the new quest for freedom by the ex-slaves. Religion gave enslaved Africans a sense of personhood, dignity, and power they were otherwise denied in their lives, a way of showing the world their humanity and resisting the gruesome experience of slavery. The church provided the vehicle for individual leadership, institution-building and community organization. The 'black church' has played an intricate role in the African American community and continues to do so today. LVC will honor this tradition in worship.
Community members are welcome to attend the service and meal. Please call the Office of Multicultural Affairs 717-867-6235 to reserve your seat.
