ANNVILLE, PA (03/27/2015)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College will present its annual "Evening of Woodwinds" concert Tuesday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Blair Music Center's Lutz Hall. The Clarinet Choir, the Saxophone Ensemble, the Clarinet Quintet, and the Flute Ensemble will feature in the concert. The performance is free and open to the public.

The LVC Clarinet Choir is under the direction of Beverly Ann K. Butts '78, adjunct assistant professor of music. The choir will perform Concerto in G Minor, No. 7, Mvt. 1, Allegro, by Antonio Vivaldi, transcribed by Kermit Peters; four pieces for clarinet ("March," "Humoreske," "A Childhood Memory," and "Ballet Russe") from Gordon Jacob's "Wind in the Reeds"; and "The Circus Bee" by Henry Fillmore, arranged by Jari A. Villanueva.

The LVC Saxophone Ensemble and the Clarinet Quintet are also under the direction of Butts. The Saxophone Ensemble will perform "Sailor's Hornpipe" by Henry Cowell; "An American in Paris" by George Gershwin, arranged by Gerry Cappuccio; and "Yuppieville Rodeo" by Mike Mower. The Clarinet Quintet will perform "Rondo" by Ludwig Beethoven; "Leaping Dance," from "Early Hungarian Dances from the 17th Century" by Farkas Ferenc; and Suite in B Minor by J. S. Bach

Butts is an alumna of LVC, where she received her bachelor's degree in music education. She also attended Michigan State University for her master's degree in performance and has worked toward a Ph.D. in music at New York University. In addition to being a member of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Butts frequently plays clarinet in several symphonies, including the Hershey Symphony. She enjoys teaching clarinet, woodwind methods, and clarinet choir at LVC as well as giving master classes for high school and college students.

The LVC Flute Ensemble is under the direction of Michelle L. Barraclough, adjunct instructor of music. The ensemble is comprised of students representing a variety of majors, including music education, music business, English, and chemistry. The ensemble will perform the rhythmic "Purple Earth" by Samantha Cooke, the traditional German march "Under the Double Eagle" by J. F. Wagner, and "Tamar" by Nicole Chamberlain. Tamar was inspired by the composer's trip to the Republic of Georgia and features Eastern European melodies mixed with unusual techniques on the flute.

This semester the Flute Ensemble also participated in the "Bach in 10" event held Saturday, March 21 on the LVC campus, where they performed several works of Johannes Sebastian Bach. The event was a part of the international "Bach in the Subways" day, held each year on March 21, during which musicians perform Bach's work in public spaces.

Barraclough joined the LVC faculty in 2003. She teaches flute lessons, pedagogy, and literature courses, and she coaches the LVC flute ensemble. Barraclough is a native of Camp Hill, Pa. She holds a BFA in Flute Performance from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from Catholic University, where she studied with Alice Weinreb of the National Symphony Orchestra. She is a founding member of the Keystone Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Pennsylvania composer Jack Stamp. She was a featured solo performer at the opening concert of the Delta Omicron triennial conference in Louisville, Ky. in 2002. Barraclough has performed locally with the Greater Harrisburg Concert Band, York Symphony Orchestra, Central PA Oratorio Singers, and the Susquehanna Chorale. She founded her own regularly performing chamber trio, The Silverwood Trio, in 2003 with cellist Brenda Johnson and oboist Kirstin Gordon.

Lebanon Valley College offers numerous public performances by students, faculty, and guests of the College throughout the semester, many of them free and open to the public. For the list of recitals this spring, visit www.lvc.edu/music/events.aspx.
