ANNVILLE, PA (01/08/2015)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College kicks off the spring semester with a performance by Kuok-Wai Lio, a pianist set to embark on a national tour. The concert is free and open to the public and will be held on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Lutz Hall of the Blair Music Center.

Lio is a 24-year-old pianist with big plans and the skill to match. Known for his absolute control over the pieces that he performs, this "musician's musician" is nonetheless more than willing to display an ardent passion for music as well. This emotional contrast is trademark of Lio's playing style, separating him from others that focus solely on technique.

His recent work includes taking master classes with European pianist AndrĂ¡s Schiff, while building his repertoire and reputation. He has pieces by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Mozart under his belt, performing each in front of a live audience. Lio has won several international awards and received the 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grant. His expertise in performing solo recitals is complemented nicely by his orchestral work with the Macau Orchestra, the China Philharmonic, and the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Lio will begin his LVC performance with the melancholy "Variations in F Minor, Hob. XVII:6" by Joseph Haydn before transitioning into Robert Schumann's whimsical and emotionally diverse piece, "Humoreske, Op. 20." The show continues with the startling violence of Franz Shubert's "Sonata in G Major, D. 984," and concludes peacefully, displaying Lio's fondness for musical contrast.

Lebanon Valley College offers numerous public performances by students, faculty, and guests of the College throughout the semester. Visit http://www.lvc.edu/music/events.aspx for a list of spring recitals.
