ANNVILLE, PA (04/17/2012)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College will present an "Evening of Woodwinds" April 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lutz Hall of the Blair Music Center. The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert consists of clarinet players under the direction of Beverly Butts '78, adjunct assistant professor of music; flute players under the direction of Michelle Barraclough, adjust assistant professor of music; and saxophone players, under the direction of Tom Strohman '75, associate professor of music.
The flute program includes two movements of a sonata by Downs, the famous "Colonel Bogey" march, a beautiful arrangement of the English folk song "I'll Love My Love," the flirty "Habanera" from Bizet's opera "Carmen," and "So Long, Farewell" from Rogers and Hammerstein's beloved musical, "The Sound of Music." According to Barraclough, the ensemble's final selection "will incorporate special surprises for the audience."
The flute ensemble includes 18 students who come from a variety of majors on campus. The group meets weekly for rehearsals and has previously traveled to the Cornwall-Lebanon and Oley Valley school districts to share their music and enthusiasm for the flute.
The clarinet program includes "Impresario Overture," by W.A. Mozart, arr. Russell Howland, "Send In The Clowns," Stephan Sondheim, arr. Jerry Neil Smith, and "Russlan and Ludmilla Overture," by Mikhail Glinka, arr. Paul Harvey.
Students enrolled in the clarinet, flute, or saxophone ensembles at LVC have been practicing throughout the semester. This concert is the culmination of their efforts in the music classroom. To learn more about LVC's music programs, visit www.lvc.edu/music.
