Trumpet Ensemble and Brass Quintet will perform in the annual Touch of Brass Concert

ANNVILLE, PA (04/10/2015)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College's Trumpet Ensemble and Brass Quintet will perform in the annual Touch of Brass Concert Wednesday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Lutz Hall of the Blair Music Center. The performance is free and open to the public.

The Trumpet Ensemble will perform "Kayee Fanfare" by Jack Stamp; Canzon per Sonare #2 by Giovanni Gabrieli; Variations on a Russian Folk Song, Op, No. 2 by Dmitry Kabalevsky; "Laudi alla Vergine Marie" by Giuseppe Verdi; and "London Bridge" by Jim Parcel.

John E. Copenhaver, adjunct instructor of music, directs the six-trumpet ensemble. The group plays a wide variety of literature, ranging from early church music to modern day jazz. The Trumpet Ensemble members are Samantha Heydt '15, Robin Holman '15, Noah Houtz '18, Joshua Eimer '17, Joseph Swartz '15, and Peter Yzquierdo '15.

Copenhaver, a 1987 graduate of LVC, teaches trumpet at his alma mater. His extensive experience includes studying trumpet with Fred Erdman, Walter Gier, Skip Stine, Lloyd Baddorf, and Dr. Ken Laudermilch. Copenhaver is a frequent performer in a variety of musical venues throughout Central Pennsylvania. He has performed in concert with Andy Williams, Jack Jones, Diane Bish, Bob Newhart, The Manhattan Transfer, the Temptations, the Spinners, Regis Philbin, Petula Clark, Shari Lewis, Tommy Tune, Little Richard, The Four Tops, Bobby Vinton, Clay Aiken, and the Stars of the Lawrence Welk Show. Copenhaver is director of elementary bands and chair of the music department for the Lebanon School District. He currently performs with the Lancaster British Brass Band, By Request, and Susquehanna Brass.

The Brass Quintet will perform "Fanfare to La Peri" by Paul Dukas, arranged by Charles Decker; "Largo" of the "From the New World" Symphony by Antonin Dvorak, arranged by David Marlatt; "Three Spirituals," traditional, arranged by Walter H. Barnes ("Go Down Moses"; "My Lord, What a Morning"; & "Joshua"); and "Salvation is Created" by Peter Tschesnokoff, arranged by Vernon Whaley. The ensemble will also perform "The Music of George Gershwin" by George and Ira Gershwin, arranged by Zachary Smith, which includes the selections "Love is here to Stay," "Embraceable You," and "I've Got Rhythm," with hints of "Rhapsody in Blue."

The Brass Quintet is a performance ensemble made up of two trumpets, one horn, one trombone, and one tuba. This ensemble is course designed to introduce literature, from a variety of genres, written specifically for this instrumentation. Dr. Christopher J. Heffner, associate professor of music, directs the Brass Quintet.

Heffner taught initially at Todd County Central High School in Elkton, Ky., and currently serves as director of bands and assistant professor of instrumental music education at Lebanon Valley College. He directs the "Pride of The Valley" Marching Band, LVC Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. Heffner also supervises student teachers, and teaches instrumental literature, fundamentals of conducting, and brass techniques. He received his bachelor of music from Western Kentucky University, and his master of music in trumpet performance and doctor of philosophy with an emphasis in wind conduction from the University of Florida.
