ANNVILLE, PA (10/27/2014)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College's Small Jazz Ensemble will host a concert on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Lutz Hall of the Blair Music Center. The recital is free and open to the public.

The small jazz ensemble is slightly different than LVC's jazz band. This group features a smaller group, allowing for more democracy involved in the music making process. Every member is of equal weight, and there is a lot of room for individual personalities and playing styles to affect the overall sound of the group as the music is largely improvised (within certain parameters) after the melody has been stated.

The group has varying instrumentation from year to year, and this semester they will be performing as two small groups, one as a quintet and one as a sextet. All compositions being performed are by Thelonious Monk. Monk is one of the most important musicians in all of jazz history.

The ensemble provides an opportunity to study America's rich heritage of improvised music. Participation is by invitation of the director, Timothy Wolfe '07, adjunct assistant professor of music.

Lebanon Valley College offers numerous public performances by students, faculty, and guests of the College throughout the semester. For the list of recitals this fall, visit http://www.lvc.edu/music/student-recitals.aspx.
