Leg Must Pass NY HEAT to Save NY Families $75/Month

As Albany leadership claims affordability is top priority in fight against climate change, they can alleviate crushing energy bills for low-income families ASAP, or let them suffer sky-high summer cooling costs

ALBANY, NY (05/22/2023) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday, May 23, elected officials will join 100+ advocates at the NY State Capitol to demand the NYS Legislature pass NY HEAT before the end of session. NY HEAT would cap energy bills at 6% of household income for low- and middle- income families, saving them on average $75 per month. Low-income New Yorkers are the most impacted by volatile gas prices and high energy bills, paying three times more of their income on energy bills than non-low income households. On top of the $75/monthly savings, NY HEAT gets rid of the unfair 100 foot rule, which forces hardworking families to pay for subsidized gas hookups for new customers to the tune of $200 million every year. As New Yorkers face utility rate hikes, the group will demand NYS leadership pass NY HEAT to make energy – a basic necessity – affordable for all families.
