NIVERVILLE, NY (02/17/2009)(readMedia)-- Libertarian candidate for NY's 20th Congressional District, Eric Sundwall of Niverville NY, released a statement opposing Illinois Congressman Bobby Rush's House Resolution 45.
Sundwall stated; "It's clear from our current Senator and former congresswoman's recent statements that responsible gun ownership is not a function of the government. As a life long hunter and gun owner, my first responsibility is to safety. No amount of regulation, licensing or government hand holding will change that."
House Resolution 45 would require gun owners to take complex written tests, pay a new tax, require owners to be fingerprinted and create a Federal gun registry. A recent Supreme Court decision District of Columbia v. Heller held that individuals have a second amendment right to gun ownership.
Sundwall continues; "Anybody who grew up in this area knows that problems with guns don't originate here. If people like Chuck Schumer think it's a wild west mentality up here, he's seriously mistaken. I'm curious about how the Republican and Democrat feel about this legislation. I don't need a rating system from a special interest to oppose this type of legislation."
