Libertarian Rejects Obama's Surge & Rahm's Draft

Withdraw from Afghanistan, No National Service

NIVERVILLE, NY (02/18/2009)(readMedia)-- Eric Sundwall, independent and Libertarian candidate for Congress (20th NY), today condemned President Obama's escalation of the war in Afghanistan. The President ordered 17,000 more troops into the eight year old war.

"The troops won the war years ago," Sundwall said. "Now the politicians are losing it. The military toppled the Taliban and an elected government was installed. Due to President Bush's negligence, bin Laden escaped. Our troops can do nothing more and should come home immediately."

Sundwall recalled the advice reportedly given to Lyndon Johnson by Douglas MacArthur: "Never get involved in a land war in Asia."

"I have full confidence in the military's ability to rapidly respond to any future threats coming from that country," Sundwall said, "but I have zero confidence that they can build a nation there that doesn't exist and never did. It's time to leave."

Sundwall challenged his evasive opponents to take a position on the war.

Sundwall also warns that; "Americans could face a renewed military draft or the even worse national service scheme. National service is being promoted by former Congressman Rahm Emmanuel, now President Obama's White House chief of staff. Mandatory servitude is not the answer to the country's problems. As former Congressman Ron Paul contends, the military should remain voluntary and instead the ever-widening commitments to bases and foreign military intervention should be stopped."
