Local Residents Recognized for Academic Achievement at University of Scranton Commencement

SCRANTON, PA (06/18/2012)(readMedia)-- Laura Rose Capasso, Bellmore, Alex Justin Chiodo, Westbury, Caitlin Anne Hayes, Baldwin, and Megan Marie Stewart, Hicksville,were among the 65 students honored by The University of Scranton during its undergraduate Class Night ceremony. The Jesuit university awarded outstanding members of the Class of 2012 for academic achievement and service.

Capasso received the Excellence in Mathematics Award. She earned a bachelor of science, magna cum laude, in mathematics and Italian.

Capasso was a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, Alpha Mu Gamma, Alpha Lambda Delta and Alpha Sigma Nu honor societies. She was also co-director of the Royal Ambassadors program, a supplemental instructor for the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, an Orientation Assistant and a participant and facilitator for Scranton Emerging Leaders.

Capasso was an Americorps Scholar in Service to Pennsylvania and traveled to San Lucas, Guatemala and Appalachia, Ky., for service trips.

Capasso will seek long-term service opportunities in the fall while pursuing graduate studies in Applied Mathematics.

She graduated from W.C. Mepham High School, Bellmore, N.Y.

Chiodo was the recipient ex aequo of the Excellence in Computer Information Systems Award. He earned a bachelor of science, summa cum laude, in computer information systems.

Chiodo was a member of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society and the Association for Computing Machinery. He was named to "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."

Chiodo will seek employment in a tech-based firm in New York City or Long Island.

He graduated from Kellenberg Memorial High School, Uniondale, N.Y.

Hayes received the Sigma Theta Tau, International-Scholarship in Nursing Award. She earned a bachelor of science, summa cum laude, in nursing.

Hayes was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Sigma Theta Tau honor societies. She was named to "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges" and was a member of the Student Nurses Association. She participated in a service trip to Savannah, Ga., and represented the University at "The Geoffrey Allen Walp Memorial Student Nurse Challenge" and the "Promise of Nursing for Pennsylvania" events.

Hayes plans to attend the Graduate Nurse Residency Program at New York University Langone Medical Center.

She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, Hempstead, N.Y.

Stewart received the Excellence in Health Advocacy Award. She earned a bachelor of science, magna cum laude, in community health education.

Stewart was a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society, the President of Colleges Against Cancer and Relay for Life. She is involved with the American Cancer Society at the divisional level and is a Eucharistic minister. She interned at the Jewish Community Center.

Stewart plans to work for a non-profit organization and attend graduate school.

She graduated from Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset, N.Y.
