FRONT ROYAL , VA (02/14/2011)(readMedia)-- Louisa C. Stanwich, a freshman at Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA) in Front Royal, VA, has received admission to the Academy's "High Flight" Class. Louisa is the daughter of John and Maria Carosa Stanwich of Oakton.

High Flight is R-MA's specialized track for students who have aspirations of attending a United States service academy and pursuing a career as a military officer. Randolph-Macon Academy has a history of successful admissions to the service academies-in fact, in 2010, two R-MA alumni graduated from the Naval Academy and two others graduated from the Air Force Academy. However, applying to a service academy is a difficult task. Students must be organized and have not just top grades and test scores, but must also have a track record of extracurricular activities, leadership experience, and community service hours. High Flight takes advantage of strong programs already in place at R-MA, all of which are necessary for a service academy appointment: advanced academics; SAT/ACT preparation; leadership development; athletics; and community service. In addition, to these components, High Flight adds in the physical fitness preparation needed for the service academies. Students are also assigned to a mentor who is experienced in the service academy application process.

Interested cadets completed an application and were subsequently interviewed. A selection committee reviewed all of the applications, interviews, and the applicants' performance in academics, extracurricular activities, and AFJROTC at R-MA. Seven of the fifteen cadets who applied were accepted into the program.

Louisa was recognized as a formal member of the High Flight Program on Monday, February 14, 2011. Louisa will receive a $2,000 scholarship for each year she is in attendance at R-MA and participating in the program.

Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA), founded in 1892, is a college-preparatory, coeducational day and boarding school for students in grades 6 through 12. Students in grades 9-12 participate in R-MA's Air Force JROTC (Junior Reserve Office Training Corps)program. R-MA is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is located in Front Royal, VA.
