Luther College junior Beth Martens to present mezzo-soprano recital

DECORAH, IA (03/21/2013)(readMedia)-- Beth Martens, a Luther College junior from Winterset, Iowa, will perform a mezzo-soprano recital at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 13 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus.

Martens, the daughter of Wayne and Debi Martens of Winterset, is majoring in music at Luther. She is a 2010 graduate of Winterset High School.

Martens will perform works by Gaetano Donizetti, Reynaldo Hahn, Nils Lindberg and Robert Schumann.

A reception will follow the performance. Both the recital and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Martens is a student of Susan Williams, Luther adjunct faculty in music. She will be accompanied by Luther professor of music, Carol Hester, flute, Luther juniors Katie Scherr, piano, Suzanne Russel, flute, and Luther instructor of music, Kathy Reed, harpsichord. Her recital partner is Victoria LaCroix, Luther junior.

Luther is home to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the nation with six choirs, three orchestras, three bands, two jazz bands and nearly 1,000 student musicians.

Luther students participate in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons and master classes. More than 350 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, church music and performance.
