DECORAH, IA (12/05/2012)(readMedia)-- Emma Lofthus, Luther College junior from Edina, Minn., was one of three students selected to present their work at the 2012 modern language conference, Streamlines, Nov. 10, at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.
Lofthus said of preparing for the conference, "The biggest thing I learned was that it's possible to enjoy research and doing homework when you have a topic that you're passionate about!"
At the conference Lofthus presented "Socio-Political Implications in Hugos 'Le Roi S'Amuse' and Verdi's 'Rigoletto.'" In the paper Lofthus described her research about the French play by Victor Hugo that was turned into an Italian opera by Giuseppe Verdi. The play and opera include many implications of European political strife and social questions.
Lofthus, the daughter of Mark Lofthus and Marian Blattner of Edina, is a French major with a music minor. She is a 2010 graduate of Edina High School.
The mission of Streamlines is to encourage the students to use their intellectual, spiritual, imaginative and emotional development to grow as a person. It allows students to gain a new appreciation of themselves and their heritage through language, literature, culture and writing. The conference is hosted by Loras College, Clarke University and University of Dubuque.
Luther College is an undergraduate liberal arts institution of 2,500 students in Decorah, Iowa.
