Middle School Girls Perform Experiments From "Bird Catching" to "You Be the Doctor!"

WHAT: Local girls will experience the exciting world of science through captivating hands-on labs with exploration into the world of animals, food, genetics, medicine and the building - and programming - of their own LEGO robots. Wilkes University's Women Empowered by Science Summer Camp encourages girls' interest in studying science and pursuing science careers. Students participate in different laboratories each day, allowing them to sample many areas of science through investigative experiences and projects.

WHO: Seventy-six girls entering seventh or eighth grade from area middle schools. Schools represented include: Bear Creek Community Charter, Crestwood, Dallas, Dunmore, Greater Nanticoke, Hanover, Kistler, Mattei Middle School, Pittston Area, St. Jude, St. Nick/St. Mary, Solomon Plains, Wilkes-Barre Academy, Wyoming Area Catholic, Wyoming Seminary, Wyoming Valley West.

Bird Catching: Monday July 23 and Tuesday, July 25, 9 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., Cohen Science Center 103 and Kirby Park

Campers will be introduced to Pennsylvania birds at Kirby Park where they will learn to handle them safely and take basic measurements. They will also learn how birds influence forests and human life. Note: Please call 570-466-5532 to arrange to meet the group in Kirby Park.

You Be the Doctor!: Tuesday, July 24, 2 to 3:15 p.m., Wednesday, July 25 and Thursday, July 26, 9 to 10:15 a.m., Thursday, July 26 and Friday, July 27, 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., Cohen Science Center 101 and 102

Students will work in groups on a case study involving the diagnosis of a medical condition based on symptoms. They will research the symptoms, gather pertinent medical information and make a concluding diagnosis, presenting their project to the other groups.

Neuroscience: Brain Cake and Icing: Tuesday, July 24, 9 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., Cohen Science Center 102

Campers will learn about the four lobes of the brain and what each lobe controls by icing a "brain cake."

Physics of Dance: Wednesday, July 25, with sessions at 9 to 10:15 a.m., 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. and 2 to 3:15 p.m., Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts

Campers will learn how physics affects how fast or slow a dancer spins, how gravity coincides with balance, and why a dancer can jump so high as they choreograph their own dance in the lab.

Solar Cooking: Monday, July 23, 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. and 2 to 3:15 p.m., Cohen Science Center 102

Campers will investigate the benefits of supplying energy needs from renewable energy sources. Each student will build a pizza box solar oven and will use them to cook up a treat.
