MINI Coupe Has Halloween Liftoff in New York City
Automaker's New Sporty Two-Door Gets Space-Themed Launch
HARTFORD, CONN. (11/07/2011)(readMedia)-- While automakers often use car shows to launch their new models, MINI created its own "out-of-this-world" spectacle to get the 2012 MINI Coupe off the ground. To celebrate the all-new two-seater's arrival at MINI dealerships, the automaker created a 30-foot-tall parade float with booster rockets modeled on the familiar NASA setup. However, instead of the space shuttle, a MINI Coupe stood ready to launch.
Created for the annual Village Halloween Parade and displayed in the Meatpacking District of New York City through Nov. 1, the float's slogan told city dwellers to "Prepare for Launch." MINI's fastest production car yet, the skyward-facing 2012 MINI Coupe was accompanied by four brand ambassadors dressed as astronauts that handed out MINI-branded freeze-dried ice cream and additional vehicle information.
"MINI's ad campaigns are just as memorable as the cars, and they always reflect the inherent fun of the MINI driving experience," said Tim Parker, general manager of New Country MINI, a Hartford, Connecticut MINI dealer. "I'm sure years from now, people will remember that little rocket car, which is an apt description of the MINI Coupe."
With a lower roofline and an even more streamlined design, the MINI Coupe is a funky addition to a lineup already noted for its unique styling. Like all MINIs, the Coupe comes with three available drivetrain packages, with output ranging from 121 horsepower in the standard model to 208 horsepower in the John Cooper Works package. The Coupe's lighter weight and aerodynamic design are what makes it the fastest MINI yet, allowing for acceleration that, while not quite that of a space shuttle, can still be a blast for drivers on Earth.
The MINI Coupe's appetite for fuel matches its small dimensions, which means even its most powerful model is capable of 33 mpg on the highway. Meanwhile, the 181-horsepower Coupe S mid-level trim gets 35 mpg on the highway and the standard model will return 37 mpg, proving that fun and fuel-friendly aren't mutually exclusive.
While the MINI Coupe is fresh on the scene now, a convertible version called the MINI Roadster will soon replace it as the newest MINI. The Coupe was designed from the beginning to go topless, which means additional chassis bracing ensures a solid foundation on the Roadster. MINI will launch its new drop-top early next year, allowing Connecticut MINI fans to grab one in time for next summer.
"MINI is rolling out several new models in the next couple years, so this is an exciting time for fans of the brand," Parker noted. "While some are more than happy with the classic MINI Cooper, others are looking for something a little more different. MINI is spreading out and offering more stylish options that also vary in function."
MINI has also announced it will produce a three-door version of the popular MINI Countryman, providing yet another model for MINI lovers seeking greater capability. Called the Paceman, the new MINI crossover is expected to arrive at dealers in 2013 and will share drivetrains with its five-door brethren, including the available ALL4 all-wheel-drive system.
