Marietta College names Kristy Newman Pioneers volleyball coach
Maryville College graduate becomes 12th coach in program history
MARIETTA, OHIO (01/31/2018) Marietta College Director of Athletics Larry Hiser announced the hiring of Kristy Newman as the Pioneers' new head volleyball coach. Newman becomes the 12th head coach in program history.
"We are really excited to welcome Kristy to our athletic and college communities," Hiser said. "It was clear to us that she knows how to be successful in today's coaching environment: where to find prospects, how to cultivate them and how to handle the team once they arrive on campus. She quickly established a rapport with the committee and the current players and really came after our job. Kristy is a great fit for our department and we look forward to her collaboration and leadership."
Newman comes to Marietta after serving as the top assistant
coach for two seasons at Covenant College, an NCAA Division III member of the USA South Conference, in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
"I could not be more excited to be taking over the women's volleyball program at Marietta College. I look forward to building a strong program culture and helping individual athletes reach their full potential on and off the court," Newman said. "I would like to thank Larry Hiser and the rest of the search committee for this incredible opportunity to lead the Pioneer volleyball program. I was impressed with how close and connected the coaches are across all sports and I'm excited to be going to a place where people support one another and want to see one another succeed."
In her two years with the Scots, Covenant won a pair of USA South
West Division Championships. This past fall, Newman helped the Scots to a 25-8 overall record and a perfect 12-0 conference slate. Covenant won the USA South Tournament title and earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Scots set a school record with 17-straight wins and the program's first-ever regional ranking.
"I would also like to thank my former administration, players, and head coach Joanna Ehman at Covenant College," Newman said. "They have been extremely supportive since the day I stepped on campus. Their support allowed me to learn and grow to be ready for this step as the head coach of the Pioneers."
Prior to Covenant, Newman spent one year as an assistant coach at St. Andrews University, an NAIA member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference,
in Laurinburg, North Carolina. She assisted with the day-to-day operation of the volleyball program and served as the Knights' head junior varsity coach.
In addition to her collegiate coaching background, Newman has extensive club experience. She served as head coach for A5 Chattanooga Volleyball, The Academy of Volleyball (Chattanooga, Tennessee), C4 Explosive (Cleveland, Tennessee), and K2 Volleyball Club (Louisville, Tennessee).
A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Newman received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management from Maryville College in 2014. She accumulated over 300 kills in her career as an outside hitter for the Scots.
