MORRISTOWN, NJ (12/15/2010)(readMedia)-- College of Saint Elizabeth (CSE), 2 Convent Road, Morristown, N.J., student and Marlboro resident Brittany Hinton, a junior for the Screaming Eagles' cross country team completed a phenomenal season. Hinton finished first overall at this year's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Conference Championship, held at Penn State Berks, Reading, Pa. on October 30, 2010 with a time of 19:10 for the 5K Penn State Berks Course. She was honored with the Runner of the Year Award for her performance at the NEAC Cross Country Championships and was also recognized on the NEAC All-Conference first team.
Continuing her streak of success, Hinton received three Women's Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Week selections throughout the season, while setting two course records and breaking the College's record by running 3.1 miles in 18:59.14 at the seventh Annual Highlander Invitational in Newark, N.J. She was named NEAC Player of the Week for the third time this season for her stellar performance on the Highlander course. In addition to winning the Highlander race, Hinton won three other first place finishes and one second place. In her first race of the year, Hinton finished first at the Baruch College Invitational running a 6K in a time of 24:36 and helped the team to place fifth. At the Manhattanville Invitational, Hinton not only finished first but set the course record at 16:53 for 2.75 miles. Hinton just missed breaking her 6K record from last year at the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women
(NJAIAW) Osprey Open hosted at Richard Stockton College, placing second with a time of 23:27.32.
Most recently, Hinton set another course record at the Sunken Meadow 5k Invitational held in Patchogue, Long Island, N.Y. Despite the difficulty of the race, Hinton achieved the fastest time for any college female on this course. No college woman had previouslybroken 20 minutes until her course record. At this same course last year, Hinton ran 20:21 finishing third while this year she improved her time and ran 6:23 miles, completing the course in 19:50.0.
"My goal is to finish the season with the same way I started it...with a boom. I would just like to continue to run and receive faster times. I would also like to continue to motivate others on campus to run and exercise. All of the time I have people approaching me saying, 'You are my inspiration,' or 'You really motivate me.' It's such a great feeling," stated Hinton.
The NEAC has also designated the Marlboro resident as a scholar-athlete for the 2009-2010 season. Hinton, along with three other CSE students and two recent CSE grads, successfully met the NEAC's criteria by maintaining a GPA of 3.4 or higher for the fall and spring semesters combined and has also been in good standing on her team. She is a food and nutrition major at CSE.
Hinton has worked hard both in and out this year's season. During the summer, she was a counselor for a running camp (XCU Running Camp) in the Poconos, Pa. While she was there, she trained hard, running more miles than she usually does in one week. By doing that, Hinton feels that this has really helped her to flourish.
"Being a CSE Screaming Eagle means going out to train hard and perform to the best of my ability," she says.
