HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/18/2012)(readMedia)-- Marlowe J. Vilchez was inducted into the national honor society Phi Beta Kappa on May 13 during Commencement at Hampden-Sydney College. Membership recognizes the highest academic achievement, moral character, responsible citizenship, and broad intellectual curiosity.

Vilchez, a Patrick Henry Scholar, has served as President of th French Club and Secretary-Treasurer of the Unity Alliance. He was a member of the Jongleurs (theatre arts), the Hampden-Sydney Men's Chorus, the Pre-Law Society, and the Animation Club. Vilchez is a member of the honor society Psi Chi (psychology) and the social fraternity Sigma Tau Delta. At Final Convocation in April, he received the Robert H. Porterfield '29 Drama Award presented to the student who has made the greatest contribution to the community through theatre arts. Vilchez, graduating magna cum laude with a B.A. in fine arts-theatre and psychology and Senior Fellow with Honors in Psychology and Fine Arts, is the son of Ms. Kasandra V. Vilchez of Riverdale.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the needs of young men.
