Massachusetts Consumers Go Green with VW's Clean-Diesel Technology
Greater Boston Volkswagen Dealer, Feds Offer Tax Credits with TDI Purchases
BEDFORD, MASS (06/22/2010)(readMedia)-- There may not be a tax-free holiday in Massachusetts this summer, but Bay State car buyers can still save on taxes at Minuteman Volkswagen. Recognizing the green value of Volkswagen's fuel-efficient TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) clean-diesel models, the federal government is offering tax credits with a TDI purchase. However, according to the Greater Boston Volkswagen dealer, time is running out to receive the maximum tax credit on these cleaner fuel vehicles.
"This is a rare opportunity for Massachusetts VW customers to save money on taxes," said General Manager Ray Hovsepian. "But, because of the great response to Volkswagen's clean-diesel technology, the quota issued by the government for tax credits on these green vehicles is filling fast."
After June 30, the tax credits, which currently range up to $1700, will be cut in half. After December 31, 2010, the tax benefit will end completely.
Of the 2,511 Volkswagen SportWagens sold this past May-the vehicle's best month ever-86% were TDI models, showing a strong consumer inclination towards the more eco-friendly option. While hybrid technology has garnered most of the recent buzz, VW's clean-diesel powered lineup has impressed both customers and the federal government.
Volkswagen's cast of TDI models includes the Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Golf, and Touareg, which all impressively balance responsive performance with fuel economy. The 4-cylinder 2.0L engine of the Golf TDI, Jetta TDI, and Jetta Sportwagen TDI earn up to 42 mpg highway while only losing 30 horsepower from the standard models.
The extension of the TDI family to the Touareg provides a more efficient, clean-diesel SUV for eco-conscious drivers in need of a more versatile vehicle. While earning 25 mpg highway, the Touareg will handle steep, variable New England roads with 221 horsepower. Boat owners on the South Shore, North Shore and Cape Cod can save fuel while towing their vessels with the Touareg TDI's 407 lbs-ft of torque.
On top of fuel-efficiency and tax credits, low costs are also spurring an increase in TDI sales. In comparison to other gas saving competitors like the Ford Fusion Hybrid, which starts at $27,950, TDI models like the Jetta and Golf are inexpensive options. The 2010 Jetta TDI starts at just $22,830, while the 2010 Golf TDI begins at $22,155.
"The initial costs of some fuel-efficient vehicles are a turn-off to consumers," said Hovsepian. "The TDI models here at Minuteman Volkswagen are affordable to buy and will save their owners money down the road. However, to receive maximum savings Massachusetts Volkswagen customers will need to act soon."
