Media Advisory: Thousands of Summer Jobs on the Line in NYC
ALBANY, NY (05/31/2010)(readMedia)-- "Right now, we're at a tipping point in Washington. At stake are 21,000 summer jobs for our state's youth, whose unemployment rate teeters around 18 percent. Soon it will be June, summer will be here and these programs need to get up and running as soon as possible. The clock is ticking and the time for Congress to act is now."

On Tuesday, June 1, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner will be hosting a press conference at St. Nick's in Brooklyn. The program served 500 youth last year with summer jobs, but only has the funds to help 250 inner-city youth this year. Federal legislation being considered in Washington can help organizations like St. Nick's, but Congress needs to act now.
