Camp Santanoni Historical Area Ski Trip, Newcomb

ALBANY, NY (02/17/2012)(readMedia)-- WHAT: The media is invited to join DEC Commissioner Joe Martens and guests for a brief discussion of the Camp Santanoni Historic Site and a leisurely ski to the Main Lodge and Artist's Studio for hot beverages (bring your own cup). The round-trip cross-country ski is 9.8 miles on a gently sloping carriage road. This trip is part of the second of three open house weekends being sponsored by DEC, Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH), the town of Newcomb, and SUNY-ESF's Adirondack Interpretive Center this winter. A bathroom is available at the maintenance facility near the Gate Lodge and a privy is available near the Main Lodge. Guests traveling to the Main Lodge should be prepared for a wilderness experience and should pack adequate food and water for the trip. There is no cell service at the historic site but a phone is available at a nearby maintenance facility. Cell reception is available in the parking lots for the Town Hall, the Newcomb Medical Center and the rescue squad garage.

Directions to Camp Santanoni:

From the NYS Thruway: (I-90), Exit 27 at Amsterdam; North on Route 30 through the villages of Speculator, Indian Lake, and Blue Mountain Lake. In Long Lake, turn onto 28N east to Newcomb.

From Tupper Lake: Route 30 south to Long Lake; East on 28N to Newcomb.

Northbound: From Adirondack Northway (I-87), Exit 26 at Pottersville; West on 29 (Olmstedville Road) through Olmstedville to 28N; Northwest on 28N to Newcomb.

Southbound: From Adirondack Northway (I-87), Exit 29 at North Hudson/ Newcomb; (Blue Ridge Road) west on 28N to Newcomb.
