LATHAM, NY (12/26/2017) New York Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Melanie Groff, a Tannersville native, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal during a ceremony held at the Division of Military and Naval Affairs Headquarters in Latham, N.Y. on December 21.

Groff received the award in recognition for her two years of exceptional service as the aid to Maj. Gen. Anthony German, the Adjutant General for the New York National Guard.

Groff joined the National Guard in 2005 as an intelligence analyst and was assigned to the 501st Ordnance Battalion.

In 2009 Groff deployed as a Military Police Team Leader with the 206th Military Police Company to Basra, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Upon her return in 2010, she transferred to the 727th Law and Order Detachment where she served as a Military Police Team Leader.

In July 2014, Groff was selected to become a full-time National Guard Soldier where she worked in the Intelligence and Security Directorate. In 2015 she started working as the aide to the Adjutant General.

Her future assignment working for the National Guard will be in Glenville, N.Y., where she will serve as the Training Non-Commissioned Officer for the 42nd Infantry Division Intelligence and Sustainment Company.

Her awards and decorations include; the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal , National Defense Service Medal , Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal , Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge , and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.
