Mesa Native Amy Riggins Presents at National Conference

SAINT PAUL, MN (12/09/2011)(readMedia)-- Bethel University College of Arts & Sciences senior Amy Riggins from Mesa, Ariz., and Bethel University Professor of English Daniel Ritchie delivered the results of their 2011 Edgren Scholars collaboration at Baylor University's "Educating for Wisdom" conference. Their paper, "The Global Citizen without a Country?" examined some of the abstractions of the current global citizenship movement. Riggins and Ritchie suggested that people could profit from the example of Edmund Burke, an 18th-century politician who created global sympathy for the oppressed peoples of India by finding affinities between British and Indian cultures.

Established in 2001, the Edgren Scholars Award encourages collaboration between faculty and students through the summer months and has resulted in numerous scholarly publications and presentations.
