Mission Debrief: News from the Philippines

Working with healthcare professionals in the Philippines, Physicians for Peace volunteers provided care for 1,645 patients on a multi-specialty mission

NORFOLK, VA (11/23/2010)(readMedia)-- Dr. Juan Montero, the 2010 Physicians for Peace Excellence in Service Award winner, and John Knight, co-founder, Physicians for Peace's Seeing Clearly program, will discuss their recent mission to Manila, Surigao del Sur and Zamboanga. About 1,645 patients received care on this multi-specialty mission, which included educational and clinical components focused on three core PFP programs: Walking Free, Seeing Clearly and Specialized Surgery. Montero and Knight are longtime volunteers with Physicians for Peace.

WHAT:

The Walking Free program provides clinical education, medical supplies and direct patient care to amputee patients and people with disabilities. Through Seeing Clearly, local eye care professionals are properly equipped and trained to provide comprehensive eye exams and appropriate and medical treatment to underserved populations. The program also provides patients with donated prescription glasses. Through our Specialized Surgery program, Physicians for Peace volunteers provide hands-on training to local surgeons in specific surgical techniques, including cleft palate reconstruction and hernia repairs.
