ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (09/04/2014)(readMedia)-- For Kristina Funk, art is a vehicle of communication--perception, projection and interpretation. "Like any other form of communication, what I am saying may not be what you are hearing," she notes in her artist's statement. "For me it is about the story that you bring with you too. And the objects that make up a piece bring their own stories as well."

Mixed media artists and Elizabethtown College alumni Kristina Funk and Tom Yurkovic '08 bring their own interpretations to Elizabethtown College Friday, Sept. 12. The artists' reception begins at 4 p.m. in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center's Lyet Gallery. The exhibit continues 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through October 24.

In addition to graduating from Elizabethtown College, Yurkovic earned his master's degree in sculpture from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Funk earned her MFA, also in sculpture, from State University of New York at New Paltz.

In October, Herb Weaver exhibits whimsical ceramics at Elizabethtown College. He describes his work as an exclamation against boredom. By taking elements of everyday life and twisting or altering them in an imaginative fashion, he intends for his work to be a welcome relief from reality.

Humor plays an important role in Weaver's art. He likes to think that his style is unique and self-derived; however, he admits, many influences converge to create his own particular form of expression.

The artist's reception takes place during the College's Homecoming Weekend at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, in Zug Memorial Hall's Hess Gallery. The exhibit continues 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through December 12.

Weaver graduated from Eastern Mennonite University with a bachelor's degree in art education in 1979 and from James Madison University with a master's degree in fine arts in 1985.
