Mondello: County Clerks Join Chorus Of Opposition To Governor’s Driver’s License Plan
Mondello Statement
ALBANY, NY (10/04/2007)(readMedia)-- The decision of the overwhelming majority of county clerks from across New York State to join the groundswell of opposition to Governor Spitzer’s illegal alien driver’s license plan should be a wake up call to the Governor.
Yesterday’s Assembly Republican hearings, led by Republican Leader James Tedisco, helped highlight some of the very serious concerns of a broad cross section of interested organizations, including 9/11 family members, homeland and border security officials, immigrant rights and homeland security advocacy groups and a Congressional Representative.
Today’s outcry from the county clerks raises additional concerns about the legal consequences, costs and burdens associated with this plan.
I commend the courageous stand of the county clerks, advocates, as well as the lawmakers from both sides of the aisle in the State Legislature who are opposing the Governor’s misguided plan. I also thank the broad cross-section of New Yorkers who have put their name on the line to express their opposition to Governor Spitzer’s illegal alien driver’s license initiative through our www.nygop.org online and printable petitions.
Sadly, Governor Spitzer continues to disregard the negative feedback from the public and elected officials from across the state and nation.
It is my sincere hope that the Governor will admit his mistake and listen to the people he was elected to serve.
