Mondello Statement on Attorney General's Investigation
ALBANY, NY (07/23/2007)(readMedia)-- Today's explosive report by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo validates the frightening charges that Governor Spitzer's administration abused the New York State Police and New York's F.O.I.L. laws in an attempt to set up Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno.
This disturbing abuse of power by a Governor is unprecedented.
Governor Spitzer is ultimately accountable for the actions of his employees. He should immediately apologize to the people of the state and dismiss anyone involved in this reckless political assault.
Of greater concern, the public needs to know when Governor Spitzer was aware of this blatant set-up attempt and what the Governor's role was in its execution. This must be investigated immediately.
Additionally, the report rightly exonerates Senator Bruno for his legal use of state resources, in spite of the administration's attempt to smear his good name.
I commend Attorney General Cuomo for his courage and impartiality in this investigation.
