ALBANY, NY (06/14/2010)(readMedia)-- New York Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez today announced that the agency's Division of Licensing Services licensed 9,191 New Yorkers in May 2010, more than 34 percent more individuals than were licensed over the same period last year. That includes a 68 percent gain for security guards and a 61 percent gain for appearance enhancement operators.

Meanwhile, the Division of Corporations saw a three percent rise in the number of newly registered corporations in May 2010 over May 2009, including a more than six percent increase in both newly registered non-profits and limited liability corporations.

"Though public budgets remain tight, the Department of State is committed to helping New Yorkers gain the licenses they need in order to seek employment or operate a business in the state," Secretary Cortés-Vázquez said. "As we continue down the path of economic recovery, these most recent numbers show that the economic climate in our state is steadily improving."
