Town and Country Captures Biggest Share of Minivan Market
BRAINTREE, MASS (07/20/2010)(readMedia)-- For the first six months of 2010, Chrysler captured nearly half of all minivan sales in the United States, dominating the market it helped to create more than two decades ago. Chrysler's Town and Country and the Dodge-branded Grand Caravan combined to grab 49.1% of minivan sales, with the Town and Country selling the most models.
Massachusetts Chrysler sales were buoyed by Chrysler's Minivan Pledge, which launched in February. This incentive gave owners of competing minivans the chance to trade in their vehicles and get a 60-day money-back guarantee on a new Town and Country.
"The Town and Country has a strong appeal because of its size, and it isn't just a family car in Boston. It gets transformed into taxis and cargo vans because it packs a lot of capacity in a small frame that you can actually park in Cambridge or the Back Bay," said Eric Ao, General Manager of Greater Boston Chrysler dealer Quirk Chrysler Jeep.
Although the soccer-mom image of minivans contrasts with the hip, urban attitude of Boston, Chrysler minivans have been a mainstay on Massachusetts roads since 1983. Chrysler created its first minivans as a modern, higher-riding version of the station wagon that offered the convenience and cargo space of a larger vehicle with the handling and fuel economy of a car.
The 2010 Town and Country lineup offers three V6 engines, including a 4.0 liter 24-valve version that produces 251 horsepower while maintaining a fuel-friendly 17 mpg/city and 25 mpg/highway. Safety remains one of the Town and Country's strongest features, with electronic stability control standard on all models and five-star crash ratings in four categories from the U.S. government.
"We still see customers who are shy about minivans because of the family-car reputation," Ao said. "But once they get behind the wheel and experience the luxury and performance of a Town and Country, they change their mind. This is a car for adults, but it's also a car that will surprise owners with its usefulness in crowded parking lots and neighborhoods notorious for difficult parking."
Chrysler announced in early July that it will extend its 60-day money-back guarantee to all of its models or offer customers up to $4,000 cash back. Chrysler will also make the first two payments on any new car, up to $500 a month, for customers who buy before August 2.
